Remote Pilot Licence — Unit 1 RBAK

Basic Aviation Knowledge for RPAS

Learning Objectives

By the end of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Express direction of flight using a 3-figure group, the clock code, and cardinal/ordinal compass points
  • Explain the difference between heading and track, and how wind causes drift
  • Understand wind velocity and the relationship between true and magnetic heading
  • Express time in 4, 6, and 8-figure groups and convert between UTC and Australian local time
  • Differentiate between height (AGL), altitude (AMSL), and elevation, and use correct aviation units of measurement
  • Explain the four aerodynamic forces acting on an RPA and the principles of Bernoulli, Coanda, and Newton's Third Law
  • Apply basic weight and balance concepts including CG limits and loading
  • Describe pitch, roll, and yaw movements and identify the components of a remote pilot station
