Top 5 Tips for Getting Your Drone Licence
Getting your Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) is the first step toward a career in commercial drone operations. Whether you are looking to start a drone business or add drone skills to your existing role, proper preparation will help you get the most out of your training. Here are our top five tips.
1. Practice Flying Before Your Course
While no prior flying experience is required for RePL training, arriving with some basic stick skills will help you focus on the more advanced aspects of the course rather than struggling with basic controls.
If you have access to a consumer drone, spend time practising:
- Hovering -- Maintain a steady position at a fixed altitude
- Orientation -- Fly the drone facing toward you (nose-in) as well as away from you
- Circuits -- Fly smooth rectangular and circular patterns
- Smooth inputs -- Practice gentle, controlled stick movements rather than jerky corrections
Even a small indoor drone or a flight simulator can help build muscle memory and spatial awareness before your course begins.
2. Study the Theory Material Early
The RePL course includes a significant theory component covering aviation law, airspace, meteorology, human factors, and operational procedures. Most training providers will send you pre-reading material before the course.
Do not leave this material until the last minute. Give yourself at least a week to work through the theory content. Key areas to focus on include:
- CASA regulations for remotely piloted aircraft
- Australian airspace classifications and restrictions
- How to read aviation charts and NOTAMs
- Weather conditions that affect drone operations
- Risk assessment and mitigation strategies
Understanding these concepts before you arrive at training will allow you to engage more deeply with the material and ask better questions during the course.
3. Get Your Aviation Medical Sorted Early
You will need a valid aviation medical certificate to obtain your RePL. This requires a visit to a Designated Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME).
Book your medical appointment well in advance of your course date. Appointments can sometimes take several weeks to arrange, and processing times can add further delays. Having your medical sorted before the course means you can receive your licence promptly after completing training.
If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, contact CASA or a DAME early to understand what documentation you may need.
4. Choose the Right Training Provider
Not all drone training courses are equal. When choosing a provider, look for:
- Industry experience -- Instructors who work professionally with drones bring practical insights that go beyond the textbook
- Small class sizes -- More individual attention and flight time during the practical component
- Relevant endorsements -- Make sure the course covers the aircraft categories you need for your intended work
- Post-course support -- Look for providers who help graduates with ReOC applications, job placement, or ongoing professional development
- Real-world scenarios -- Training that includes mission planning and operational decision-making, not just basic flight skills
At National Drones, our instructors are active commercial operators with thousands of hours of real-world flight experience. We keep class sizes small to ensure every student gets ample one-on-one time.
5. Think Beyond the Licence
The RePL is your entry ticket, but success in the drone industry requires more than a licence. Before you begin your training, think about:
- What industry will you serve? -- Mining, agriculture, construction, real estate, emergency services? Each sector has different requirements and opportunities
- What additional skills will you need? -- Photogrammetry, thermal imaging, LiDAR, GIS? Specialist skills command higher rates
- Will you work independently or for an employer? -- This determines whether you need your own ReOC
- What equipment will you invest in? -- Research the drones, cameras, and software used in your target industry
Having a clear plan for how you will use your licence will help you make better decisions during training and hit the ground running once you are qualified.
