Powering Progress: A Case Study on Drone Inspections of 25,000 Power Poles
Overview
National Drones helped revolutionise utility sector inspection programs by conducting drone inspections of 25,000 distribution poles for a local utility provider. The solution modernised maintenance processes through advanced aerial technology.
Our drone-enabled solutions negate the need for lineworkers to climb poles or work at heights, thereby enhancing worker safety. We provide crystal-clear, high-definition visual evidence of pole conditions, spotting even the smallest issues like woodpecker holes, decay, hardware corrosion, and more.
The Challenges
Traditional power pole inspections required technicians to traverse rough terrain, battle weather, and climb heights. This manual approach created inconsistencies based on individual inspector experience. Data became siloed across departments, preventing unified infrastructure assessment and increasing costs, inefficiencies, and safety risks.
The Solution
National Drones deployed advanced drone technology capturing high-resolution imagery for desktop assessments and asset maintenance planning. The aerial perspective eliminated subjective manual assessments and created unified databases showing complete asset health status, modernising utility management practices.
The Results
The project collected approximately 150,000 high-resolution images of easements and pole tops. These data enabled detailed desktop evaluations, advanced analytics, and informed decision-making about asset management, remediation actions, and infrastructure uptime improvement.
