A schematic side view of a multirotor over a landing pad. A shaded band about one rotor diameter deep above the ground is marked ground effect. The aircraft makes a slow, planned descent into the band, hovers low, then climbs back out. High up, the downwash goes straight down and tip vortices form at the rotor tips. Inside the band, the downwash hits the ground and spreads outward, the tip vortices weaken, and a power needed gauge drops a little below the level needed out of ground effect. As the aircraft climbs out, the benefit fades and the power needed returns. The gauge is qualitative, with no numbers. The Height slider sets the aircraft's height. The still frame shows the low hover.
